Why Darker Evenings Change More Than Our Bedtime

There’s something about that first evening when it gets dark earlier that makes us realise autumn is on its way.

Suddenly, the evening walk feels like more effort, plans become easier to cancel, and the sofa starts looking very appealing at 6pm!

But darker evenings can affect more than our bedtime. They can influence our energy, mood, exercise, social lives and daily routines too.

Our routines change

When the evenings are lighter, getting outside after work or school feels natural. As the days get shorter, it’s easy to become less active without even noticing.

A lunchtime walk, getting outside during the day or finding an indoor activity you enjoy can help keep movement part of your routine.

We can become more home-based

Autumn naturally encourages us indoors. That’s not necessarily a bad thing — cosy evenings can be lovely — but it’s worth making an effort to stay connected.

Meeting a friend for coffee, having a family games night or simply picking up the phone can make a difference to our mental wellbeing as the evenings get darker.

And then there’s the screen time…

Dark outside, warm inside and your phone within reach. Sound familiar?

Screens can easily fill the extra time we spend indoors, particularly in the evening. Try swapping some scrolling for something that helps you properly switch off — reading, listening to music, chatting to someone or getting an early night.

Embrace the change

Autumn doesn’t have to mean doing less. It might simply mean doing things differently.

Get outside while it’s light. Keep moving. Stay connected. Protect your sleep. And give yourself permission to enjoy the slower pace.

Because looking after our wellbeing isn’t about fighting the seasons.

It’s about adapting to them.
